Informative writing is where the author tries to give some sort of information or instructions that is typically based on fact.
Persuasive writing is where the author tries to convince someone of their side of a situation.
For informative writing, I would like to have children in my classroom write out in their own words, the definition of some mathematical truth. In their paper I would like to see some examples of what they are informing me of, and a general/abstract form of what they mean. The last part involves representing numbers with letters so that we can see what is happening without being confined to specific examples.
For a persuasive writing, I would like to have the children in my classroom write why a particular problem that each will be assigned is correct or incorrect. They will need to reference definitions and show that the problem they have is either plausible or not, and then convince me of why to the best of their abilities.
I think this is a really good idea. The idea of having the kids prove why it is what they say is an awesome way to help them remeber. It always helps to remember when you teach somneone else and that would be like the kids were teaching eachother.

ReplyDeleteAwsome, you definetly have great ideas about incorporating writing into math, it allows me personaly to expand on the wrtiting process.Your ideaa are fun, interactive, and your students will learn without an extreme effort.
ReplyDeleteI especially like your persuasive writing assignment. Hopefully the problem the students' will have to research will have a good connection with them to keep them engaged and make the assignment relevant to them. I think a rubric can also be done to evaluate the level of thinking and work put into this assignment.
