Assessment is a tool that educators use to provide support and improve student learning.
1. One example of authentic testing in my future classroom will called a day in the supermarket! This will involve giving children a budget and a list of essentials that they need to buy with that amount of money. Here they will have to make decisions about the types of food they want and if they have enough money to get what they want.
2. Another example of authentic testing in a calculus class could be, finding out the "stress and strain" on a particular bridge. This is important in real life because if this isn't tested and measured, it could be possible that once their is weight on the bridge it could collapse and kill people that are on it. This involves taking triple integrals in 3-space.
3. Another example of authentic testing in a calculus class could be learning how to read diagnostic images. These come in the form of complex graphs that inform a doctor how much of a drug to administer to a patient in critical need. This is so important because if the graph is misinterpreted, the unfortunate individual will probably not recover and the wrong drugs/amount could be fatal.
I like your second idea, actually bringing real-life into the classroom. Unfortunately, we know that the students calculations will probably off a bit. I remember playing a game where you made bridges. It would show you where the major stress points were. I think it was called Pontifex. Really cool.
